Go Around

OBJECTIVE:  To develop the pilot’s skill and knowledge, planning, and judgment for go-arounds.

ELEMENTS

  • Situations where a go-around/rejected landing is necessary
  • Importance of making a prompt decision
  • Importance of applying power immediately after the go-around/rejected landing decision is made
  • Importance of establishing proper pitch attitude
  • Wing flaps retraction
  • Use of trim
  • Landing gear retraction
  • Proper climb speed
  • Proper track and obstruction clearance
  • Use of checklist

COMPLETION STANDARDS

  • Exhibits knowledge of the elements related to a go-around/rejected landing
  • Makes a timely decision to discontinue the approach to landing
  • Applies takeoff (usually full) power immediately and transitions to climb pitch attitude for Vy, and maintains Vy +10/-5 knots
  • Retracts the flaps as appropriate
  • Retracts the landing gear, if appropriate, after a positive rate of climb is established
  • Maneuvers to the side of the runway/landing area to clear and avoid conflicting traffic
  • Maintains takeoff power and Vy +10/-5 to a safe maneuvering altitude
  • Maintains directional control and proper wind-drift correction throughout the climb
  • Completes the appropriate checklist

 COMMON ERRORS

  • Failure to recognize a situation where a go-around/rejected landing is necessary
  • Hazards of delaying a decision to go-around/rejected landing
  • Improper power application
  • Failure to control pitch attitude
  • Failure to compensate for torque effect
  • Improper trim procedure
  • Failure to maintain recommended airspeeds
  • Improper wing flaps or landing gear retraction procedure
  • Failure to maintain proper track during climb-out
  • Failure to remain well clear of obstructions and other traffic

THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Start in practice area, stalls recover to go-arounds, early landing practice are all go-arounds.
  • What is Balked Landing or Go-Around Airspeed in NORMAL procedures section of the Aircraft POH/AFM? (Vx/Vy
  • with flaps down?) Teach initial climb with flaps down at balked landing airspeed, then to current PTS.
  • Hand guarding throttle unless trimming
  • TRIM!
  • Walk field first, determine abort point and go-around or "roll off end" decision point
  • Density Altitude Makes All Fields Short
  • Wake turbulence, windshear, collision avoidance
  • Discuss flap retraction causing that sinking feeling, what bounce to take it around, and when the go-around is no longer possible
  • If in doubt, go around
  • Once going around, go-around, a landing is not possible.
  • When cleared to land one is also cleared to go-around, despite any controller heartburn.
  • Don’t drop the plane to fly the radio, ATC can SEE your go-around, you don’t have to tell them immediately.
  • 5 C’s - Cram, Climb, Clean, Clear, Communicate (Cram in power, put the nose on up, gear up flaps up, clear the GPS Suspend Mode as needed, then talk to ATC if needed)
